A few of my favorite things.

So, the New Year is upon us.

This, for a lot of people, means trying to figure out how they are going to “improve”; how they are going to “make their life better”; how the next year will be “the year I become a super-hero version of myself”. In theory, there is nothing wrong with any of this. The problem seems to come when these ideas stem from the fact that you think you’re not good enough just as you are.

Because most of us are just fucking fine, thanks.
Just as we are. Flaws and all.

I’m all for self-improvement, as long as it comes from a place of “hey, I’m pretty damn awesome, but I could feel even more awesome if I (fill in the blank)”.

Of course, this doesn’t include assholes. Those people should really do something about that.

At any rate, before I go off and make my resolution (yes, just the one) for this year, I’m going to take a look back at some of my favorite things from 2013. Because I can. And because I don’t want to forget these things, and putting them all in one place seems like a fine idea to me. Also, it’s my blog and fuck off if you don’t like it.

PS, it’s not in my resolution for 2014 to swear less or be less of a snarky bitch.

1. This.

fb devo

Not only did it make me laugh, but it has given me hours and hours of fun bringing it back up over and over again to the guy that said it. There isn’t much more win than that. If only he knew how much that actually made me laugh. I’ll never tell him. That would ruin my fun.

2. This.

Ecran_Titre_d'American_Horror_StoryI started watching because of a suggestion from a friend of mine, and holy fuck. American Horror Story is the best goddamned thing I have watched on television in ages. The worst part about it? I’m fucking caught up now and actually have to wait for new episodes. If you haven’t watched it yet, what the hell are you waiting for?!

3. This.

The song is all the right kinds of awesome, and the video was put together by my good friend Doc. There is nothing I don’t love about it. And it’s so fucking true.

4. This.

hardcore

I have played a lot of Diablo 3. Like, a lot. Level 60 Hardcore means I took a character to the highest level possible – without dying. In hardcore, if your character dies, that’s it. No second chances. I fucking did it, and as geeky and nerdy as that accomplishment is, it’s all fucking mine.

5. This.

mijo

My best friend. Everything she said, I could say back to her, plus so much more. Made me cry. Bitch.

6. This.

day-of-the-doctor

Oh how I mourned the loss of 10. So much so, that I couldn’t watch any of 11 until it was almost over. And then… The Day of the Doctor news. I quickly got caught up, and wound up liking Matt Smith more than I thought I would. But nothing…nothing made me weep tears of pure joy than the return of David Tennant. Of course, I wept all over again when he had to go. Again.

7. This.

e

A picture taken by my very metal friend to show me how ‘brutal’ the conditions were in Kentucky when I was digging my way out of my house. I don’t know what my favorite part is. The fact he’s injured and still throwing the horns, the fact that during his idea of brutal he can wear shorts, or the bear slippers. Wait, it’s the bear slippers.

8. This.

uppityPosted to Uppity and Untamed, my friend Staci nails this one. I don’t refer to her as the Lady of Light for nothing. I try to remember this every single time I start a sentence with those two words.

9. This.

whobunnyI laughed SO FUCKING HARD at this. In fact, if Bunny knew just how hard I laughed at her “THAT IS NOT OKAY”, she’d very likely never talk to me again. But seriously, I did. And I did again, just now.

10. This.

chrissaSometimes, I crack myself up. In the process, I’m not afraid to crack my friends up. Thankfully, they take it well. Chrissa is a yogi and posts the most inspiring pics. This one, however, inspired me to super-hero it up. Because it looked like she just landed and was about to go hulk-smash on some bitches. She totally could, too.

11. This.

tim

My friend Tim is one of those people that is kind of quiet, but whenever I see he has tweeted at me, or cc’d me on a tweet, I go immediately because I know it’s something that is going to touch me. This one touched me so much that I thought I should get it tattooed on my ass. Perfection in a RT.

11. This.

flood

In the midst of the worst flooding the province has ever seen, the Calgary Police Service wins the internets.

12. This.

slayer

This was, perhaps, the best link I have ever seen regarding the WBC, and that includes the defection of Megan Phelps. Which was also pretty fucking stellar.

13. And finally… This.

IMG_4829

The way my friend Adam came out on Facebook to his family and friends. There is nothingĀ  more fucking fabulous than this. Also, sprinkles. Nothing. More. Fabulous.

Thank you to everyone involved in making 2013 a memorable year, for these – and for so many other reasons.

I think you’re all awesome.

Happy New Year!

L.

So happy to know that something I did helped to make your year.
Hopefully I can do it again this year.
Goodbye 2013. Please, let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

I feel honored to get a This-y award from you, Lori, on your end-of-year hit parade. More importantly, I feel honored to be your friend. You were among my first contacts in today’s social media, and one of the most constant, accepting, and real.

I feel fortunate to have had a good 2013; you helped make it good. But then, you’ve done that every year I’ve know you.

aw Tim… you made me tear up. of course, you’ve been known to do that. i adore you, sir. and will continue to do so for a very, very long time.

  3. Holy shit – level 60 on Hardcore?! I’m impressed. Seriously . . . I miss playing video games, so very much. I actually haven’t touched DIII yet . . . I might still be working my way through DII, on those rare times that I actually have a moment to play a game. But I’ll be back. Some day. Just know that you have my awe.

On the topic of missing time, I really need to get my ass in gear about American Horror Story. I have a horrible habit of picking up shows just as they’re about to go off the air, and then getting stuck waiting for the last episode or two. Part of me is holding off on American Horror Story just because I know that, as soon as I catch up with the first season, they’ll announce the current season is the last.

Chrissa is awesome. I’m pretty sure she fights supervillains in her spare time. But her pictures make me feel like I’m especially weak, though made of concrete.
