i watched you this morning
running around your own little world
as if there was nothing
nothing else but you.

i watched go here and there
then back to here
then there and there again
as if you had purpose.

i watched as you never thought
to look beyond yourself
and beyond your world
to notice the more.

i watched you gather and ready
yourself for whatever day
you might have ahead
of you, in your world.

you never once looked up
or around or down or at
anything but the task you
had directly in your sight.

how dare you?
don’t you know there is
something greater than you
happening here?

who the hell do you think
you are, just worrying
about nothing but what
sits in front of your eyes!?

look up, look around, look
left and right and behind
and ahead because the world
is so much bigger than you!

i watched you run around
your eight legs furry and
your multifaceted eyes almost
glowing in the morning light.

and you took no notice
of anything around you
or of what you left in your
hurried path.

perhaps i ask too much of
you and perhaps i expect
more than you have to give
because after all you are

just a spider.
